In the hot days of summer what could be better than to see a show set in the tropics of the South Pacific?

South Pacific is considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. In 1949 a leading theatre critic told the show’s original star Mary Martin after her first performance “Don’t take this show to New York”. To which she replied “WHY?” and was responded with “It’s too good for them”. Well not only did they take it to New York, but it opened to rave reviews, 10 Tony nominations (it won all 10) and ran for over 5 years. It might have been too good for New Yorkers but they sure knew how to embrace it. Now some 50 years later it reopened once again in New York to rave reviews and many awards. With 11 Tony nominations, and 7 wins including Best Revival it once again proves it is one of America’s favorite musicals of all time.
Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples -- US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat -- and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices.
There are many reasons to see this show. It happens to be one of the most beautiful shows visually I have ever seen on Broadway. Most of the show looks just like a postcard from the South Pacific. But another reason is that for a limited time you have the opportunity to see the delightful Laura Osnes. This is Laura’s second Broadway show after winning the role of Sandy in Grease on America’s YOURE THE ONE THAT I WANT. This pretty young engenue stands strong in the shoes of the show’s original Nellie, Kelli O’Hara.

"South Pacific" on Broadway Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

The curtain rang down on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific in 1954 after five years of extraordinary acclaim and countless awards including nine Tonys and a Pulitzer. Now in its first Broadway revival, one of my favorite all time shows, SOUTH PACIFIC won seven 2008 Tonys and has been playing to sold-out houses since the first preview in March 2008 and show's no sign of slowing down anytime soon!

The marvelous cast of 40, led by Laura Osnes(Grease) and 2008 Tony-winner for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Paulo Szot, is directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher (The Light in the Piazza,Awake and Sing! and the current critically acclaimed hit play "Joe Turner's Come and Gone")

Although well known for its extraordinary score -- the songs include "Some Enchanted Evening", "Younger Than Springtime", "Bali Ha'i", "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame", and "A Wonderful Guy" -- SOUTH PACIFIC is also a deeply felt drama. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949.

South Pacific at Lincoln Center-One of New York's Best Shows

In 2008 South Pacific won 7 Tony Awards for Broadway's Best Revival. Our little ticket agency Applause Theater Service, located in New York City, sold a ton of tickets for this show.

Although it is still popular, many theater-goers have seen it. And you know the old saying, "whatever goes up, eventually comes down". South Pacific is one of New York's landmark shows and this version is only the first revival of an over 50 year old show. Maybe this is why it is so special. Currently Laura Osnes stars as Ensign Nellie Forbush, taking over the role played by Kelli O'Hara. Ms. O'Hara is having a baby soon and plans on returning to South Pacific in October of 2009. The supporting cast for South Pacific is extremely talented and the creative team features direction by Bartlett Sher, scenic design by Michael Yeargan, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The talent both on stage and creatively are some of the finest the theater industry has ever seen.

Laura Osnes to Sail into SOUTH PACIFIC Replacing Kelli O'Hara Starting March 7; O'Hara to Return in October

Laura Osnes who most recently starred on Broadway as Sandy in the revival of Grease (I was not a fan of the show but liked her a lot), after winning a nationwide talent search to cast that role on the NBC TV series Grease: You're The One That I Want, will now take over the role of Nellie Forbush in the Tony Award winning musical "South Pacific" beginning March 10th at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Kelli O'Hara who originated the role is leaving to have her first child with her husband Greg Naughton and will return on Tuesday, October 6th (Maybe! It's not certain).

Great news for Kelli who has stayed in this role a lot longer than I thought she would AND is planning on coming back. I loved her in her two previous shows, The Light in the Piazza and The Pajama Game whom she starred in with Harry Connick Jr. As a matter of fact I just saw a recent interview with Kelli and she claims that Harry and she will both be doing another show in the near future. They had such wonderful chemistry together. I actually thought that they were an item during that show, at least that's what the rumor around town was.

Anyway, back to Laura, she was probably the best thing in Grease which I hated and I feel that she will make a fine Nellie. We shall see!

South Pacific is one of my all time favorite shows and it's an absolute must see. It's a gorgeous production with the most amazing music.
